Your Quick Guide to Finding the Right Massage Therapist

Finding the right massage therapist for yourself is like finding that one true love. It may be quite a challenge at first but once you’ve settled down with the one you truly love, it’s going to be mostly a smooth sailing journey on your end.

Before you schedule an appointment with a massage therapist here in Iowa City, read on below for a quick guide to finding the right massage therapist.

  • Identify your massage goals and figure out the type of massage that you want. Would you like to improve the quality of your sleep? Or do you want a certain type of massage that can help improve athletic performance? By the time you’ve figured out the type of massage and the corresponding benefits you’re after, you can already narrow your search for a massage therapist.
  • Check for credentials. You can either visit the spa or massage center or check online. You can also call a spa or massage clinic and ask about their therapists’ style, techniques, years in practice, specialty areas, and trainings.
  • Ask for opinions from friends and relatives who regularly set massage appointments. Your general health care provider is also an excellent source for referrals.
  • Consider your gender preferences, location of the clinic, costs, insurance preferences, and logistics. You might also want to ask for discounted packages rates if there’s any.

Here at our practice, our massage therapist has over 15 years of experience and can create a session designed around your needs and preferences.  While it can be a great way to just de-stress, it also can be catered to aches, pains, injury prevention, sports improvement and even emotional balancing.

When Not to Get a Massage

There’s no disputing the fact about what a massage can do to the body and mind — from reducing stress levels to improving one’s mood and sleep quality. While majority of the effects of massage are at equal parts positive and beneficial, we would like to point out here at our Iowa City massage center that there are certain conditions or circumstances that do NOT call for a massage.

By and large, you are NOT to set up an appointment for a massage if:

  • you currently have fever
  • you are currently dizzy or nauseated
  • you were recently involved in an accident
  • you currently have bruises, rashes, large open wounds, or severe sunburns
  • you have history of allergic reactions or sensitivity to massage oils, creams and/or disinfectants

What if you have an existing chronic condition? Should you stop getting massages? It depends. If your current condition is currently treated and managed effectively, there is no reason for you not to enjoy the stress-relieving benefits of a good massage. A medical condition can be labeled as “treated and managed effectively” if:

  • the condition is well-controlled with medications
  • you are already familiar with the signs and symptoms and what makes it better or worse
  • the condition is successfully managed or tested over time with supportive activities such as exercise, physical therapy, etc.

You are not to have a massage if you are just starting with your medications and/or treatment. Generally, if you have an existing condition, it is best to talk to your general doctor first about your intentions of undergoing massage therapy.
